Being known as 4PM (pronounced Empat PM), which comes from the initials of the organization’s name in Malay, Persatuan Persuratan Pemuda Pemudi Melayu, which has four Ps and one M, 4PM began as a driving force in youth development within the Malay/Muslim community.

Beyond this, the organization is supported by illustrious alumni members who have been nurtured through 4PM’s activities and have developed into prominent national leaders.

Among others, some of these prominent leaders include:

  1. Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Mayor, North East District, who was active in the field of literary contests organized by 4PM
  2. Mr Yatiman Yusof, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, who was active in 4PM’s youth activities
  3. Mr Hawazi Daipi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower, who was 4PM’s honorary secretary-general for 5 years
  4. Mr Sidek Saniff, former Senior Minister of State for Environment, who was active in literary activities
  5. Mr Shaari Tadin, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, who was 4PM’s President in 1968
  6. Mr Maarof Salleh, former President of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), who was active in activities organized by 4PM
  7. Mr Shafawi Ahmad, a prominent community and national leader, who was 4PM’s President for 16 years
  8. Mr Kalam Hamidi, a popular drama activist in the 1960s, who was Chairman of the Cultural Body of 4PM
  9. Mr Djamal Tukimin, a well-known local writer, who was active in 4PM’s activities in the 1980s
  10. Mr Rashid Tahir, a dentist and grassroots activist, who was very active in 4PM’s activities in the 1990s leaders and personal endeavors.

Members do not just volunteer with 4PM but also serve in various capacities with other organizations such as clubs and societies in schools (secondary, JCs, ITEs, polytechnics, and universities), mosques, workplaces, community-based and grassroots organizations as well as national bodies.

Among others, these organizations include the National Youth Council (NYC), National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council, NYAA Gold Award Holders Alumni, National Council of Social Service (NCSS), People’s Association, Yayasan Mendaki, Mendaki Club, Darussalam Mosque, Eunos Community Club, National Crime Prevention Committee, National University of Singapore (NUS) Muslim Society, National Institute of Education (NIE) Malay Language and Cultural Society (PERBAYU), Changi General Hospital, and the Community Development Councils.

In addition to this, 4PM’s motto of “unite and serve” has been the guiding principle for many of its members excelling in their respective professions which include teachers, lawyers, doctors, engineers, lecturers, entrepreneurs, social workers, and high-achieving students.

Coupled with the spirit of community help or “gotong-royong” enthused in its activities, 4PM has been held up by Mr Goh Chok Tong during 4PM’s 50th Anniversary Dinner in 1998 as an excellent example of an association united in its pursuit to help the Malay community as well as the larger society meet its everyday challenges.
